Local Events
Triumph events and functions are held regularly in each centre
throughout the year. Refer to the relevant centre regarding more
information about past events and any future events to be held in the
centre closest to you.
Each centre usually has a monthly 'noggin' 'n natter' as well as
at least one run per month. An annual concours d'Elegance is also held
by each centre to promote the preservation of the marque and to find
the top car in the centre. Joint events are sometimes organized by some
centres because of their close proximity to each other.
National Events
National Gathering:
Every two years, the Triumph Sports Car Club of South Africa holds
a National Gathering for the participation of all Triumph Club members
in South Africa and their guests and friends. As the word gathering
implies, this event
is primarily seen as a social event, but it is
balanced off with a few competitive events such as the Triumph National
Concours, and inter -centre competitions of a light-hearted nature. The
aim is to provide enjoyment for all and an opportunity for all in the
Triumph fraternity to meet once more.
Past Event: MASELSPOORT NATIONAL GATHERING - April 2008
|
The Pretoria centre hosted and organized the 16th national gathering
from 26 April to 1 May 2008. Initially 86 entries were received we
ended up with about 160 people and in the process filled the whole of
Maselspoort resort and nearly all the rooms in the nearby Kopano Hotel.

Registration started at 15:00 on Saturday, 26 April and was followed by
snacks at the ladies bar at the Maselspoort conference centre sponsored
by our main financial sponsor, Accordian Investments Pty Ltd
(distributors of Tata vehicles in South Africa). The first official
item was the welcome breakfast on Sunday morning while the rest of the
day was free to enable the concours participants to clean their cars or
for members to relax and socialize. Monday morning saw a huge convoy of more than 60 Triumphs leave Maselspoort for The Windmill, venue of the national concours and show day where 73 Triumphs were on display. Local Bloemfontein members also joined us at this fine venue which provided the additional cars. Of these, 39 Triumphs participated in the national concours (20 in d'Etat and 19 in d'Elegance) while the rest of the cars appeared on show only. The fact that 38 of the 39 entries won medals gives an indication of the quality of the cars in the national concours. The show day was sponsored by Tata and The Windmill casino management with lots of gift, meal and gambling vouchers thrown in for a great many lucky draws. |

On Monday evening optional but most interesting and entertaining visit
was arranged to the Boyden Observatory virtually next door to
Maselspoort resort. Tuesday morning started with a photo session for
participants at the Maselspoort entrance prior to members departing on
the Tour of Bloemfontein. This was a full day excursion to some of
Bloemfontein's interesting spots in the form of a treasure hunt
directed by cryptic questions. Participants could do the tour at their
own leisurely pace and it appears most people enjoyed the event while
they discovered that Bloemfontein is actually loaded with many historic
places. On Tuesday evening we enjoyed a hamburger and chips meal sponsored by Tata again as a prelude to an inter-centre quiz and parts-in-a-bag competition. The cherry on top, however, was Wendy Hay's most entertaining if not daring cabaret show that revealed the tremendous hidden acting skills of so many of our Pretoria members! This once again proved that talented people drive Triumphs. Wednesday the BGM started where Alan Grant (president), Gerhard Vorster (chairman) and Nols Pienaar (registrar) were re-elected to the national committee. Eric Fletcher was appointed new Sabrina editor and Judy Harris was elected new secretary/treasurer in place of Ken Boss. Honorary membership was awarded to Gino Casieri in recognition of many years of outstanding service to the TSCC. Congratulations, Gino, the Pretoria Centre in particular wishes to express our pride because to date we have been the main beneficiaries of all your years of dedication. The BGM was followed by the driving skills test where members had a lot of fun thanks to Marius and Rory as well as Glaudina and Chris Smit who helped them staging two timed events. The disused go-kart track in particular proved to be a lot of fun with engines revving and tyres protesting loudly as participants tried to better their times whilst trying to keep the tennis ball from flying out of the bowl mounted on their Triumph's bonnet. The dinner-dance and prize-giving ceremony on Wednesday evening was very enjoyable. Good food, fine wine and a very convivial spirit as club members enjoyed each other's company before returning home the next day. Many people made the most of the Seventies theme with a number of not-so-young hippies putting in an appearance while the disco lady played nostalgic songs from the seventies resulting in many members gyrating along on the dance floor. Great great fun! The prize and awards ceremony started with the concours medals: Concours d'Etat Gold medal winners - Hennie van der Walt, Spitfire 1500 (Bloemfontein) Chris Smit, TR7 (Pretoria) Eddie Steele, TR4A (Johannesburg) Gino Casieri, TR6 (Johannesburg) Les Cock, TR7 (Border) Bill James, Chicane, (Bloemfontein) Italo Moranduzzo, TR3A (Johannesburg) Bob Pretorius, Spitfire Mk4 (Port Elizabeth) Silver medal winners - Dennis Cook, TR6 (Cape Town) Mervyn Cronje, Stag (Kwazulu-Natal) Duncan Roberts, TR6 (Pretoria) Adrian Treyvellan, Chicane (Bloemfontein) Chris Buckley, TR4A (Cape Town) Bill James, Stag (Bloemfontein) Hans van Eck, Triumph 2000 Mk2 (Border) Keith Kelly, GT6 Mk3 (Johannesburg) Sue Strachan, Spitfire Mk4 (Kwazulu-Natal) Piet Smit, Vitesse (Bloemfontein) Bronze medal winners - Dave Lugg, TR3 (Kwazulu-Natal) Concours d'Elegance Gold medal winners - Geoff Kriel, TR6 (Border) Heinrich Koncki, TR4A (Port Elizabeth) John Roets, TR3 (Johannesburg) Silver medal winners - John Williams, TR7 (Border) John Fletterman, TR3 (Pretoria) Alan Grant, TR3 (Johannesburg) Harry Fairley, TR2 (Johannesburg) Phillip de Kock, Spitfire Mk3 (Kwazulu-Natal) John Leonard, TR7 (Kwazulu-Natal) Gavin Turner, TR5 (Border) Eric Fletcher, TR8 (Pretoria) Deon de Kock, TR4 (Port Elizabeth) Arthur Walker, TR7 (Kwazulu-Natal) Bronze medal winners - Eleanor Fourie, Spitfire Mk4 (Bloemfontein) Rudi Venter, TR7 (Kwazulu-Natal) Keith Kelly, TR6 (Johannesburg) Louis Greeff, TR3A (Border) Janse Uys, TR7V8 (Border) Brian Hansell, Stag (Kwazulu-Natal) Later that evening the following trophies were awarded: Ian Evans Trophy (Good club citizenship) Dennis Cook (Cape Town) Graham Cheetham Trophy Ken Boss, retiring Sabrina editor (Cape Town) TR Register (UK) Friendship Trophy Hosting Centre (Pretoria) Best car D'Etat Hennie van der Walt, Spitfire 1500 (Bloemfontein) Best car D'Elegance Geoff Kriel, TR6 (Border) Most desirable car on show (peoples' choice) Duncan Roberts, TR6 (Pretoria) Furthest distance traveled Chris Buckley, TR4A (Cape Town, from Tanzania) Tour de Bloem winner Gino Casieri, TR6 (Johannesburg) Best male driver Geoff Kriel, TR6 (Border) Best female driver Eileen Cruise, GT6 (Cape Town) Best unrestored car (D'Elegance) Rudi Venter, TR7 (Kwazulu-Natal) Best overall performance (combined concours and driving test) Sidescreen TR (TR2,3,3A): Alan Grant, TR3 (Johannesburg) Michelotti TR (TR4,4A,5,6): Geoff Kriel, TR6 (Border) Amaseven TR (TR7,8): Les Cock, TR7 (Border) Spitfire/GT6: Bob Pretorius, Spitfire Mk4 (Port Elizabeth) Stag/Saloon: Adrian Treyvellan, Chicane (Bloemfontein) Club points towards President's Cup 1.
